Daily Herald Tribune Articles... 1970's

What's happening: The 70s are a time of adaptation for the Association as the first group of students from the Peace School of Hope are now beyond school age and ready to move on. In response to a desire to supply employment opportunities, Swan Industries is built and opened on the site that now houses ‘Stepping Stones Day Care.” Adult residences are built during this time, the first located at 109th Avenue, followed by homes at 96A St., 114th Ave and 107th Ave. The organization changes its name to “Grande Prairie and District Association for the Mentally Retarded” as a reflection of the broader age group it serves.

Peace School of Hope is incorporated into a wing of Montrose Junior High School as a result of the decision to move to Public School Board administration.

Embezzlement serves as a catalyst for the formation of a management board. A reconsideration of the organization’s mission and values ensues. Protection of kids is expanded to include a “balancing” of philosophical values by what is termed “The Dignity of Risk” and “Normalization.”
